Why a Spinning Rod
Spinning rods are the most common type of fishing rod. With various types of spinning rods, one can handle most fishing methods, and for typical all-purpose fishing for species like perch, pike, and game fish, a spinning rod is the first choice for most sport fishermen.
Today, most spinning rods are made of carbon fiber, which makes the rods very light and sensitive. However, carbon fiber is quite fragile, which makes it important to store and handle them carefully. Usually, spinning rods are two-piece, but there are also other variants available.
Choosing the Right Spinning Rod
Which spinning rod to buy depends on the type of fishing one intends to do and the size of the lures one plans to cast. If one is fishing for pike with large lures, a spinning rod with a high casting weight is needed. On the other hand, if one is fishing for grayling and trout with small spinners, a rod with a low casting weight is desirable. If one is fishing from shore and values casting distance, a longer spinning rod is preferable, but if fishing from a boat or in small waters with lots of vegetation, a shorter rod may be beneficial.
Most spinning rods have a length between 7-9 feet. A foot is 30.48cm, so a typical spinning rod is usually between 2-3m long. The casting weight can vary from a few grams to several hundred grams. If you want an all-purpose rod that is versatile, we usually recommend a spinning rod that is 8 feet long and has a casting weight of 10-30g.
