Ice Fishing and Tip-up Fishing

Ice fishing is practiced throughout the country as soon as the ice has formed and become thick enough. Depending on the species targeted, one should either buy an ice fishing rod or a tip-up fishing rod. Ice fishing rods in various models are used together with lures or mormyshkas, often rigged with maggots, for fishing species such as perch, char, trout, and rainbow trout. If one is after pike, tip-up fishing with live bait is usually the best method. Then one baits one or more rods with live fish and waits for the pike to strike the bait.

Buying an Ice Fishing Rod

Ice fishing rods come in many different models suited for various fishing situations. The traditional ice fishing rod has a fixed spool and is the most common type of ice fishing rod and is used for all types of ice fishing. The smallest and most sensitive ice fishing rods have a narrow spool with a screw for adjusting the release of the line. These rods are designed for fishing with light lures or mormyshkas. There are also somewhat heavier ice fishing rods that have a button you press with your thumb to release the line. These rods are very easy to use and are a perfect choice for the inexperienced ice angler. There are also ice fishing rods with reel mounts for a separate reel. This allows one to choose which reel they prefer and thus customize their ice fishing gear according to their own needs.

Buying a Tip-up Fishing Rod

A good tip-up fishing rod should withstand the strains of tip-up fishing. The strikes are often hard and the fight can happen on a short line. The rods will also be used on really cold days and then be stored away in a shed for the rest of the year. Therefore, the tip-up fishing rods are adapted for tough treatment. Tip-up fishing rods are available in various lengths, but 4 is usually considered standard. A tip-up fishing rod should have a strong backbone to hook properly but at the same time have a relatively soft tip so as not to put too much pressure on the tackle. A tip-up fishing rod also works excellently for fishing species like mackerel during the summer.
